Add from server

Documentation | Help File | UI | 2D Mode | Menu | Layer | Add from server

Clicking on the Layer/Add from server menu item provides the means for opening a layer stored on a remote server (such as via the web using an OGC/OpenGIS protocol). The menu item invokes the Open from server dialog box for entering the path to the file on the remote server and the server's network address. When opened, the layer is automatically rendered on the Map area. If there is an open map project or layer, the new layer is added to the project and appears in the layer list on the Legend.

The program automatically attempts to read the coordinate system information of a layer opened from a server and, if different than the map area coordinate system, reprojects the layer display to the map area coordinate system.

To open a layer file stored on a remote server and add it to the current project

  1. Click on the Layer/Add from server menu item - this invokes the Open from server dialog box.
  2. Within the Open from server dialog box, enter the exact path to the file in the Address field.
  3. Click on the OK button.

Similar functions

  • To add a non-database layer from a file stored on a local drive, use the Add feature.
  • To add a map layer stored in a database on the local computer or via a network, use the Add from server feature.
  • The Open from server feature can also be used to open a layer from a server if there is no open project or layer. File/Open from Server cannot be used to add a layer from a server to a current project.

Associated function

  • To close (remove from the Map area) a layer, use the Remove function.

Note

  • The Open from server feature supports the WMS, WMTS, and WFS protocols defined by the OGC/OpenGIS organization (http://www.opengeospatial.org/) and the ECWP protocol defined by the ER Mapper company (http://www.ermapper.com/), which is now owned by Intergraph company. The ECWP protocol supports opening ECW and JPEG2000 format map images from a server.
