Open from server

Documentation | Help File | UI | 2D Mode | Menu | File | Open from server

Clicking on the File/Open from server menu item provides the means for opening a map project or layer stored on a remote server (such as via the web using an OGC/OpenGIS protocol). The menu item invokes the Open from server dialog box for entering the the exact path to the file on the remote server and the server's network address. When opened, the layer is automatically rendered on the Map area.

The program automatically attempts to read the coordinate system information of the newly opened layer and correctly display the layer.

To open a map project or a layer file stored on a remote server

  1. Click on the File/Open from server menu item - this invokes the Open from web service dialog box.
  2. Within the Open from web service dialog box, enter the exact path to the file or select the path using the URL field.
  3. Choose a service type, version and set connection parameters (optional)
  4. Click on the Connect button to find available layers.
  5. On next tab page choose a layer and its parameters
  6. Click on the OK button.

Similar functions

  • Both File/Open from Server and Layer/Open from web service can be used to open a layer when there is no map project or layer. Use Layer/Open from web service to open a layer from a server and add to the current map project.
  • To open a project file or an individual vector or image layer file stored on a local storage medium, use the Open feature.
  • To open a map layer stored in a database on the local computer or via network, use the Layer/Add SQL Layer feature.

Note

  • The Open from server feature supports the WMS, WMTS, and WFS protocols defined by the OGC/OpenGIS organization (http://www.opengeospatial.org/) and the ECWP protocol defined by the ER Mapper company (http://www.ermapper.com/), which is now owned by Intergraph company. The ECWP protocol supports opening an ECW or JPEG2000 format map image from a server.
  • If a map opened from the server is composed of multiple layers on the server side, the Editor treats the map as a single layer.
  • If File/Open from server function is used while some layers are open, the Editor will prompt for saving any changes made to the open layers and/or project before closing them.
