Clicking on the Layer/Field rules menu item provides the means for customizing or standardizing how values are entered into each attribute (attribute table column), for more efficient and accurate data entry. Available tools icnlude drop-down attribute value selection lists, logical alias naming schemes, formula-based rules, default values and hidden fields.

This feature can be particularly useful for data collection performed in the field using mobile/handheld devices.

The Field rules functionality allows to define value aliases by using simple syntax: alias = value. It is possible to define a default value for an attribute field - the field value will be automatically set to that value for each new shape. The user can define formulas which are used to verify the correctness of the value. An attempt to enter incorrect value will be interrupted and a warning message will be displayed.

The Field rules functionality defines four modes of displaying values:

• SelectList - value can contain a list of items,
• Multiline - value can be multiline,
• Edit - value is displayed in an editable text field,
• Hidden - value is hidden.

Test formula.

To test the correctness of the field rule being defined click on the Test button within the Field rules dialog box.
