The area on the ground represented by one pixel of an aerial image.

Generally the higher (or finer) the resolution, the smaller the ground area represented by each pixel, which means that smaller objects can be identified in the image. The lower (or coarser) the resolution, the larger the ground area represented by each pixel.

Generally, the resolution and pixel size are the same concepts, i.e, the smaller the pixel size the higher the resolution, but not always. If the pixel size of an already existing image is artificially reduced (resulting in an increase in both the number of pixels and the image size), without adding any additional information to the image, the smaller pixel size would not result in greater resolution.  Reducing the pixel size in such as case would merely increase the number of pixels and the size of the image, without adding any additional information in the sense of resolution.

The process of adjusting the resolution/image size is referred to as Scale or resampling.
